21 types of witches

There are actually countless types of witches. I'm just going to go over 21 of them because I feel these are the most common types. While looking over this list keep in mind there is some overlap between some types and you may fit into more than one type of witch which is totally fine.

Why do types of witches matter?

Knowing what type of witch you are, helps you to decide where to focus, what to research, and where your path may lead you. You don't need to fit into one type or another, but with so many different practices and styles, it helps to have an idea of where you land.

Green Witch

Can also be called garden or forest witches. They are similar to cottage witches and kitchen witches but they focus more on the earth and nature. They recharge by reconnecting with nature. a preferred method of grounding would be to walk barefoot and feel the earth beneath their feet. Some green witches work with nature spirits or the fae.

Hedge Witch

Generally, they practice alone, meaning without a coven. They tend to seem like a traditional medicine man/woman. They focus on the home and have been known to partner with animals. The word "hedge" refers to the boundary between this world and the spirit world. Hedge witches are known to travel between worlds while practicing. They focus on spirit magic and the natural world.

Kitchen Witch

Also known as a hearth witch. They practice in the kitchen mostly, with herbs, spices, cooking, baking, potions, and recipes. Their power comes from the process of cooking or baking and all that goes into it. They tend to be capable of healing through food or tea blends.

Cottage Witch

The main focus is practicing in and about the home. Their whole home is a sacred space. In the past, they were the witches who practiced underground, in their homes without anyone knowing while everyone else practiced organized religion.

Faery Witch

Also known as a Fae witch or Fairy witch. They work with the fae in at least some of their practices and spells. They tend to be fairly eclectic and work with nature spirits, woodland creatures, and trees. They mainly practice in the woods.

Fire Witch

Draw their power from fire. Practices with things like candles, burning herbs, bonfires, and anything else with an open flame.

Divination Witch

Tends to focus on divination practices mostly such as tarot, pendulums, runes, scrying, astrology, and meditation. They tend to consult spirit guides before doing any workings. They incorporate divination methods into their spells.

Solar Witch

Draws power from the sunlight. Charges tools in the sunlight instead of the moonlight. Often dress in warmer colors and enjoy sunbathing. They feel the need to get at least a few minutes of sun every day even if it's through a window because it's too cold out.

Storm Witch

Draws energy from storms and chaotic weather. Will generally time spells based on the weather rather than the moon phases or days of the week.

Swamp Witch

Often practices alone and feels out of place among most people. Don't totally agree with social norms or "get" society as a whole. Uses healing elements of nature.

Lunar Witch

Works with the subconscious, emotions, water, and powerful deep magic. Draws power from the moon and is very in tune with the phases of the moon. Always know what phase the moon is in as well as what astrological sign. Power and emotions tend to follow the moon's cycle.

Sea Witch

Has a strong connection to the ocean and water. Uses ocean water, sand, shells, driftwood, and seaweed in their practices.

Hereditary Witch

Believes witchcraft is a gift passed down through generations. Must have ancestors who were witches. They harness their power from their ancestor's spirits.

Cosmic Witch

Harnesses energy from planets and stars in their magic. Into astrology and astronomy.

Chaos Witch

Chaos Witches are often quite misunderstood. They will try any method for a magical working and tend to use not only traditional deities but pop culture figures as well. There’s much more to them but that’s the basics.

Ceremonial Witch

Also called a traditional witch. Focuses on rituals and draws power from the process of a ceremony. Likely to be in a coven.

City Witch

Also called an urban witch. Draws power from the city itself. Performs spells in small spaces and often uses energy more than tools and herbs.
