11 Cleansing Methods

Why do we need to cleanse?

Over time people, places, and things can get a build-up of energies. Sometimes the energies are negative, and sometimes they're just unnecessary. Cleansing removes any unnecessary energies giving you a clean slate to work from. It clears your, mind, space, & tools, of any unnecessary energies. There are so many ways to cleanse yourself, your tools, your space, and any items you feel need it. Below I'll go over eleven different methods you can use to cleanse anything that needs it.

Smoke Cleansing

Smoke cleansing is done by burning incense or herbs and wafting the smoke around what needs to be cleansed. Some herbs you can use for smoke cleansing are rosemary, sage, lemongrass, cedar, bay leaves, lavender, peppermint, pine, clove, dandelion, palo santo, calendula, basil, chamomile, thyme, amaranth, or mugwort.

Water cleansing

You can use water to cleanse during a bath or shower, in a spray bottle with or without cleansing herbs added to it, or even during a rainstorm. As long as the intent is clear, to be cleansed of all unnecessary energies. Careful cleansing with water, some crystals can be dissolved in water.

Salt or Selenite cleansing

Salt and selenite are both powerful cleansers. For items, all you need to do is place them in the salt or on top of the selenite and all the unnecessary energies will be absorbed. To cleanse a space, sprinkle salt around and sweep it up. The salt will absorb the energies in the space and then you sweep it up and throw it away.

Sun and Moonlight cleansing

Sun and moonlight are powerful cleansers. For items, you can leave them out in the sun or moonlight. (Careful, some crystals are damaged by sunlight) For yourself, simply stand or sit in the sun or moonlight and meditate on feeling cleansed of all unnecessary energies.

Asperging

Using sanctified water, holy water, water blessed with salt, or sun or moon water, Sprinkle it around a space, on yourself, or on your tools. You can use your fingers to sprinkle it or use an herb bundle like rosemary, sage, or lavender.

Sound

You can sing, chant, clap, ring bells, or bang pots and pans while telling the negative energies to leave. Negative energies and spirits don't like anything that brings joy, happiness, and positivity, so anything that does is especially effective.

Tornado jar

Create a tornado jar by combining stormwater, cleansing essential oils or herbs, obsidian, black tourmaline, or clear quartz, and a pinch of salt in a glass jar. Swirl the jar around creating a tornado and chant "By the power of the elements, all negativity this jar will ensnare" Keep the jar somewhere safe and swirl it around while saying the chant any time you need to.

Anointing oil

Take consecrated oil and anoint doorways, items, or your wrists, temples, or third eye. Typically you draw a symbol, a sigil, a spiral, a cross, etc with the oil. Using oil not only cleanses but it holds the purity in the space, of the item, or for the person. Some good oils include but are not limited to, Frankincense, Myrrh, Sage, Rosemary, Lavender, Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Dragons blood, Lemongrass, Rose, and Citrus oils.

Dancing

Dancing is usually used to raise energy but can also be used to cleanse a space. Use sweeping motions, stomping, and clapping. These movements will bring the energy together then scatter it which will cleanse the space.

Sigils

Sigils can be drawn with anointing oil, sun or moon water, or even just drawn in the air with your hands. Sigils can be drawn on doorways, or walls, on items and tools, and on people.

Witches Whisk

Similar to a besom a whisk is a bundle of 13 branches or stems of herbs. It's usually used to throw curses back at the sender, but can also be used to cut through clinging energies.
